Elementary School Pre-K Career Guidance User's Handbook. Portland Public Schools Career and Vocational Guidance Project, 1986.
Portland Public Schools, OR. Career and Vocational Education Dept.
This document presents one of three elementary school level career handbooks designed to complement the existing middle school and high school handbooks and to meet the career goals developed by the Oregon Department of Education. This pre-kindergarten handbook is intended as a tool for teachers to use in meeting the career education goals of their students, and for schools to use in developing a team approach to career education and awareness that involves a career education coordinator, counselors, teachers, parents, and other staff personnel. The handbook is divided into three sections. Section I contains an introduction to career education and background information on career education in pre-kindergarten. Section II lists five pre-kindergarten goals which will help students to: (1) identify and develop attitudes about the world of work; (2) acquire knowledge about the world of work; (3) identify their individuality and continue to develop a relationship with occupational roles; (4) develop skills in decision making, communicating, and creating as related to the world of work; and (5) develop physical and mental skills related to occupational roles. Activities and worksheets to use in meeting these goals are included. Section III contains information on resources, including a 16-page annotated recommended buying list, a 4-page audiovisual resource list, and guidelines for requesting career education field trip funds.
