Drug Education Curriculum: Senior High. Health Education: Substance Abuse Prevention. Revised 1982.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Bureau of Health and Drug Education and Services.
This senior high school level curriculum guide on drug education is a revision of a 1981 guide. It is one of nine sequential guides for elementary and secondary teachers and administrators designed to prevent drug misuse and abuse through combined cognitive and affective development. The affective model upon which this curriculum is based has three components: development of self-image and positive self-concept, development of communication skills, and the development of coping skills. The introductory section provides necessary background information for successful program implementation: philosophy and design of the curriculum, teacher methods, topical outline of the kindergarten through grade 12 curriculum, and developmental traits. The instructional units include a preliminary materials list and three to four concepts, each with two or more objectives, and one or more activities per objective. Accompanying worksheets and illustrations are also included. Topics for senior high focus on effects of drugs on the homeostasis of the body, drugs and society, communication skills, and motivations and alternatives to drug misuse and abuse. Appendices referred to in the curriculum are available separately from the New York State Education Department. (ABL)
