Nontraditional Occupations for Women: Wages and Prospects for Employment Including an Examination of Self-Supporting Wage Levels.
Greene, Pamela
This report provides information on the wages of specific traditional and nontraditional occupations in Rock County, Wisconsin, especially regarding women. The first section identifies "traditionally male" and "traditionally female" occupations. Two tables list occupations and number/percent of women in the occupations. Section 2 presents in two tables the mean entry-level and overall employee wage levels in Rock County for the occupations defined as nontraditional and traditional. The third section furnishes the estimated minimum wage level that a woman must earn in order to be self-supporting. Explanations are provided of items included in the calculations, such as number of dependents, number of children needing child care, and source of medical insurance. Six tables are provided. The fourth section identifies those occupations with a favorable future employment outlook. Three tables are supplemented by narrative explaining the three criteria used to develop the projections: high replacement rate, expected high job growth, and a prediction of industry expansion. A conclusion suggests programs that should be considered for training women. (Appendixes include instruments and projections by specific occupations.) (YLB)
