Report of the Group of Experts on Operational Strategies for the Advancement of Women up to the Year 2000 (Santiago, Chile, December 3-5, 1983).
United Nations Economic and Social Council, New York, NY.; Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Santiago (Chile).
The report includes an analysis of the regional situation, trends, and prospects for the advancement of women. It includes a declaration of principles recognizing that the investigations and discussions are held within the context of the United Nations system and within the consideration of the progress made during the United Nations Decade for Women in Latin America and the Caribbean. Anticipated scenarios and progress made in the process of overcoming discrimination of women since the 1975 Mexico Conference are discussed. Concern is expressed about the persistent lag regarding the division of work between the sexes, the continuation of the practice of assigning subsidiary roles to women, and the limitations based on class and sex, especially with respect to the socialization of daily production. Intra-regional differences with respect to the status of women are noted. The meeting concludes that the provisions of the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women have not been respected or have only been respected in part. Strategies for the promotion of women, equality, and development and peace in the region are discussed. A final recommendation calls for the extension of the Decade, and that a new Decade, the Reflective Decade, be proclaimed as one of the main strategies for ensuring that the recommendations for the adoption of plans and programs between 1975 and 1985 will be put into effect.
