Teenage Pregnancy: 500,000 Births a Year but Few Tested Programs.
General Accounting Office, Washington, DC.
This document presents a report on teenage pregnancy. A letter to Senator John Chafee, who requested information on teenage pregnancy, gives major findings about the extent of the problem and describes the four procedures used to obtain the information: (1) an analysis of main features of two Congressional bills to amend the Aid to Families with Dependent Children program; (2) a review of available stastistics on the extent of teenage pregnancy; (3) an examination of characteristics of federal and nonfederal programs; and (4) a review of evaluation studies on the effectiveness of prior programs for assisting pregnant and parenting teenagers, as well as teenagers at risk of becoming pregnant. The briefing report provides information on the extent of teenage pregnancy, existing programs which address teenage pregnancy, the effectiveness of these programs, and how to make future legislation maximally effective. The appendices contain information on the objectives, scope, and methodology of the review; a six-page bibliogoraphy; and tables on program funds, results, and services. Several figures are included.
