This profile of the ideal teacher was compiled by the Commissioner's Student Advisory Committee which is made up of 17 secondary school students representing their respective geographic regions across New York State. Part 1 outlines positive personal characteristics, good teaching methods, and elements of sound teacher-student relationships. Brief narrative reflections on each of these points are presented. In part 2, suggestions are made on ways in which students can motivate teaching staffs at their schools: (1) periodic student evaluation of teacher performance; (2) honoring teachers at luncheons, breakfasts, and assemblies; (3) establishing a teacher recognition day; (4) letters of recommendation; (5) naming a teacher of the month and year; and (6) promoting merit awards.
