Information Regarding the Expansion and Revision of the General Secondary Methods Course in the School of Education.
Pitts, Mark Ellett
A report is given of a study conducted to create a basis for necessary decision-making in the revision of a secondary methods course at Seattle Pacific University. A review of literature was conducted covering studies about secondary education, suggested practices and materials, and teacher effectiveness research on instruction, classroom management, and thinking skills. A questionnaire was developed to get the opinions of experienced educators and education interns about the direction a secondary general methods course should take and the strengths and weaknesses of existing programs. Eleven faculty members of the School of Education at Seattle Pacific University, 10 secondary education directors whose institutions are members of the Christian College Consortium, 15 student interns, and 19 public school teachers who supervised the interns completed the survey questionnaire. Four data tables show the results of the survey. An evaluation was also conducted of current standard textbooks used in methods courses. The final section of this report states some general conclusions and implications about secondary methods, as well as about particular unit elements (instruction, classroom management, thinking skills, special needs, testing and evaluation, professional concerns, and people skills). This section serves as an introduction to an appended syllabus of a new general methods course. (JD)
