The Potential Bifurcation of American Teacher Education: A Point of View.
Monahan, William G.
The current circumstances in the teacher education profession provide the appropriate environment for much needed, effective change in the field. Serious and thoughtful exploration should be made of the length of teacher education programs, with 4- and 5-year programs evaluated and/or developed to provide substantive professional content for prospective teachers. Program evaluation methods should also be carefully considered to ensure that quick, inappropriate decisions are not made about a specific type of teacher preparation program. Teacher educators must remain active in the profession and are the key leadership in effecting substantive change. (CB)
