Historical Perspective of Educational Reform.
Schnuth, Mary Lee
From a historical perspective, this paper discusses the problems and results of educational reform in the United States over the past 100 years. Time lines are broken down to emphasize periods of significance. Each era is given a title which reflects the period, namely Educational Awakening (1890-1900), Educational Growth (1900-1945), Educational Reconstruction and Expansion (1945-1975) and Modernization of Education (1975-present). An overview of contemporary United States education and highlights of major issues surrounding the questions of what are the proper goals and direction for education are examined. A chart depicting the time line annotated with each era of significant reform is included. (SY)
