Evaluation Guide - Foundational Approaches in Science Teaching (FAST).
Brantley, L. Reed; And Others
Foundational Approaches in Science Teaching (FAST) is an interdisciplinary environmental science program which emphasizes the foundational concepts and methods of the physical, biological, and earth sciences, and relates these concepts to issues about the human use of the environment. This document stresses that evaluation is an integral part of the FAST program, and it discusses both formal and informal evaluation mechanisms used by teachers to monitor student progress. Students also are involved in evaluating their own progress through a self-evaluation mechanism which is built into the program. The guide: (1) defines evaluation, for the purposes of the program; (2) describes the functions of evaluation, using several examples of both teacher and student evaluations; (3) explains the FAST instructional system; and (4) delineates the components of the evaluation system used in the FAST program. The last and longest section of the guide consists of the evaluation instruments used in the Physical Science and Ecology strands of FAST 1, the local environment component of the FAST program, along with suggestions for preparing, organizing and assessing each evaluation.
