An Agenda for Research on Fund Raising.
Carbone, Robert F.
Directions for investigations on fund raising are offered, with particular concern for educational institutions. Excluded from consideration is donor or prospect research. The long-range goal of developing generalizations about fund raising and the importance of having professional researchers do studies on fund raising are briefly addressed. Four broad categories of studies are suggested: reviews of existing research, studies that deal with philanthropy and the philanthropic environment, studies about fund raisers and their professional activities, and studies concerned with the management of fund raising. Specific types of research include: motivational studies of individuals who make charitable gifts, case studies of the impact of fund raising on higher education institutions, task analysis of the work of fund raisers, evaluation studies of the effectiveness of fund raisers, organizational studies of the manner in which fund-raising efforts are structured and managed, content analysis of materials written and produced to support fund raising, policy studies of government and institutional regulations that affect fund raising, and application of market research techniques to fund raising. Appended is Harvey K. Jacobson's article, "Toward a Network: Problems and Opportunities in Fund Raising Research." (SW)
