This paper is a meta review of review articles on child behavior therapy published in major behavioral journals from 1981 through June 1986. Child behavior therapy is described as a treatment which emphasizes operationally defined interventions, objective measures of outcome, the experimental analysis of behavior, and an idiographic approach. Three major content areas are covered in the review. The first area focuses on target behaviors, diagnostic categories, and clinical populations and contains sections on mental retardation, attention deficit disorder, conduct disorder, developmental disabilities, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, other disorders, parent-child problems, and gifted students. The second section examines mediators of behavioral interventions with sections on parents, peers, self-management, and professionals. The final content area involves clinical and research procedures in child behavior therapy. The paper ends with observations on the marketing of child behavior therapy and conclusions and recommendations for future directions. An addendum to the paper presents tables listing studies which have employed various persons as the agents of change in child behavior therapy: (1) parents or teachers; (2) child peers; or (3) the child himself.
