Addressed in the unit on reading and writing skills are finding main ideas; mastering reading attack skills; improving memory skills; learning words from context; skimming; developing vocabulary; improving study skills and habits; writing letters of inquiry, thank you letters, and letters of application for employment; and completing forms. The unit on listening skills deals with learning to listen and evaluating listening skills. Covered in the unit on using a newspaper are the purpose, format, and parts of a newspaper; newspaper reporters; front pages; editorials and columns; display and classified advertisements; comic strips; vital statistics; and suggestions for teachers concerning supplementary activities.
