Project RESOURCE: Developing a Career Resource Center for Providing a Developmental Vocational Guidance Program. Final Report.

A project was undertaken to develop and begin implementation of a model developmental vocational guidance program for students in grades 6 through 8 at Hines Middle School in Newport News, Virginia. The computer-based Virginia VIEW Career Information Program was integrated into the model program in order to enhance students' career exploration, and various print and microfiche materials were purchased for use in the developmental program. Next, liaisons were established with two major industries in the area. The local telephone company further agreed to participate in an adopt-a-school arrangement with the middle school. Inservice programs were facilitated to give teachers and counselors current knowledge of local industrial trends, and a model career day program in which representatives for local businesses and industries provided students with first-hand career information was instituted. Through the project, relevant vocational exploration experiences were provided to over 1,000 students at the middle school, and a replicable model for a developmental career exploration program was established. They include a project balance sheet, a sample liaison training program agreement, program outlines for a one-day inservice for counselors and teachers, project-related correspondence, a copy of the evaluation instrument used by those assessing the resource center developed during the project, and minutes of the project's advisory committee meetings.)
