Literature Survey of the Use of the GED to Measure Readiness for Post-Secondary Education.
Quinn, Lois M.; And Others
This report summarizes the literature published on the use of the General Educational Development (GED) Tests to measure readiness for postsecondary education. It identifies 73 studies on GED holders' success in postsecondary education, recent national surveys of GED holders and examinees, and surveys of postsecondary institutions. Chapters I and II provide a history of the GED tests as well as GED testing norms. Chapter III presents information from Wisconsin research. Research on GED holders' success in postsecondary education is summarized in chapter IV. Chapter V briefly highlights recent national surveys of GED holders and examinees, while chapter VI summarizes the few surveys of postsecondary institutions. This survey shows that few studies have examined the performance of GED holders in postsecondary education in the last decade and that most of the existing studies involved very small numbers of GED holders. A seven-page list of references is appended. (YLB)
