Karmos, Joseph S.; Karmos, Ann H.
This manual provides a comprehensive approach to problem solving; it is written in narrative style with numerous examples. The guide is organized in eight sections that cover the following topics: (1) problem-solving overview (with suggested readings and recommendations for schools); (2) a five-step model for solving problems; (3) strategies for solving problems--general guidelines (with guidelines from deBono and Whimbey and Lochhead); (4) specific problem-solving strategies (such as thinking aloud, trial and error, working backwards, finding all the possibilities, time management, logical and critical reasoning) with sample problems for each strategy; (5) the five-step model extended for problem solving; (6) higher order problem-solving skills; (7) interpersonal skills for being effective with individuals and in groups; and (8) problem solving in groups. A 95-page appendix covers facilitative communication in teaching situations, giving numerous examples and sample problems to solve. References are included in the guide. (KC)
