Elementary Social Studies Curriculum Guide (K-5).
Jones, Carol, Ed.
Written for grades K-5 from a multicultural perspective, the curriculum guide has a dual focus: intracultural and intercultural. Rationales for this focus include raising the sensitivity of students toward their own cultural groups and examining the commonalities across cultures for an awareness of what binds people together. Implementation of a multicultural curriculum is intended to achieve the following objectives: (1) to encourage in students self-definition as well as sensitive group interaction and participation; (2) to help everyone involved in the curriculum recognize that each cultural group has a special contribution to make to the educational experience of all students; and (3) to help everyone involved respond positively to the cultural identities of others. The guide's systematic approach is carried out through concepts, objectives, and activities that directly reflect major skills described within the guide and are supported by references to textbooks, materials, instructional tools, and sources that are culturally appropriate, authentic, and that avoid stereotypes and misconceptions. At each grade level major emphasis is handled separately and each curricular goal is subdivided into five parts: objectives, suggested activities, textbook references, other sources, and integration. Developed consistently in the total program but not necessarily receiving equal emphasis in any one year are seven strands that appear throughout the K-5 program: government and law (citizenship); economics and consumerism (wants, needs, and choices); sociology (family and other groups); social psychology (self-awareness); geography; history (change and opportunity); and anthropology (culture). An appendix of 115 social studies skills is included. (TRS)
