People in the Community.
Vredeveld, George M.; And Others
Elementary Economist, v5 n1 1983-84
The theme article of this issue provides a conceptual introduction for teachers to the local community as a market. The introduction discusses the scarcity role in forcing decisions, individuals as producers, specialization of human resources, payment of human resources, and how wages reflect market conditions. Four grade-level specific units follow this introduction. The pre-kindergarten unit, "Econ Ernie's Visit," demonstrates to pre-schoolers that those things they want and need create jobs for grown-ups in their community. The unit for first and second grade helps children learn that people at home depend upon each other to do their special jobs, as do people at work in the community. The unit called "Community Careers" helps third and fourth grade children increase their awareness and appreciation of careers within the community through surveys and interviews. The final unit, intended for fifth and sixth graders, challenges children to examine career changes in past generations and predict careers in the future. (JDH)
