Computer Laboratory Management--Making Effective Use of Your Computers.
Cowles, Jim; And Others
The information on the establishment and management of a school microcomputer laboratory that is provided in this paper emphasizes ways in which use of the facility by students can be maximized, and is intended for use by other districts that have or are establishing computer labs in their buildings. The Lancaster (Ohio) City Schools serves as a model for discussing concerns encountered in managing labs, and for providing descriptions of some of the techniques and methods that have proved successful in operating, managing, and controlling the computer hardware and software. Initial problems and other issues include a secure and accessible location; climate control; lighting and seating design; power requirements, including circuits, outlets and filtering equipment; lab size; computer security; lab staffing, including the use of volunteers; proficiency testing of students before computer use; maintenance, including policies and rate of service; staff training; the availability of an open lab for all students regardless of their academic levels; and establishment of rules and procedures for computer usage. Sample materials developed to help promote effective use of the lab and copies of licensing procedures, software lists, student worksheets and tests, and other items that were used in promoting and managing the Lancaster labs are attached.
