Foreign Language Staff Development Needs Assessment: Local/State Results, 1985.

Results of and recommendations from the responses of 22 Great Falls secondary school language teachers to the Montana Foreign Language Needs Assessment survey are reported. Information presented includes the local teachers' educational background and their perceptions and attitudes about additional training in instructional techniques and testing, course requirements and sequencing, and budget and instructional resources. These are discussed in the context of current state policy and trends in the foreign language teaching profession. Recommendations include: an additional needs assessment concerning obstacles to instruction, global/international training for foreign language teachers, and teachers' personal needs; further district-based staff training in listening, writing, and reading competencies; teacher updating concerning recent trends in foreign language and international studies education; generation of new curricula in all foreign language areas; and general strengthening of foreign language education. Detailed survey response statistics and statewide proficiency guidelines are appended. (MSE)
