Supplement to the Essential Elements for the Hearing Impaired: A Curriculum Emphasizing Language, Communication and Other Developmental Areas.
Texas Education Agency, Austin.
This volume serves as a supplement to the Texas Education Agency's "Rules for Curriculum," implemented in 1984, which requires all Texas schools to teach the same essential elements to all students in kindergarten through grade 8. This manual is intended for modification of that curriculum for hearing impaired students with severe learning problems or for hearing impaired students who can use the curriculum but at a slower rate with supplementary instruction provided in language and communication. The major modifications in this manual are additions to the state basic curriculum of essential elements, with particular emphasis on English language arts. Guidelines and suggestions are listed for assessment procedures and goal selection for hearing impaired students. Among the essential elements listed for hearing impaired students in English language arts are listening, speaking, reading, writing, and language meaning and form. The next major section lists goals for the language of other content areas, including mathematics, science, health, physical education, fine arts, and social studies. Developmental areas such as vocational competence and attitude, self-concept strength, economic awareness and realism, family relationships, productive use of leisure time, social relationships, communication, and political rights and responsibilities for hearing impaired students are considered in the last section. Appendices contain correlated outline codes, an individualized education program form, and an assessment form. (CB)
