Lessons from Waterford.
Miller, Harold L., Jr.
The independent Waterford School in Provo, Utah, opened in September 1981, with the goal of providing, through technology, all children with an excellent education. Additionally, it intended to demonstrate how computers could best be used as part of educational delivery. School administrators have found that computerized instruction is improved by a professional educational computer system delivered in a room separate from regular classrooms and managed by a full-time professional. Teachers are enthusiastic about computerized instruction and make it an integral part of their role by exposure to the computer curricula and by taking an active role in computerized instructional delivery. In addition, it was discovered that the use of an instructional management system is a key source of discoveries about student learning and that many liabilities of traditional educational assessment and guidance are overcome through the use of computerized adaptive testing. Finally, the effect of the computer is to liberate teachers and students (who can effectively spend up to an hour per day in computerized instruction) from many of the traditional aspects of their roles, thereby enhancing creativity and encouraging a responsibility for learning.
