This book describes 59 cases, most involving grievance arbitration, that concern a school's right to discipline a teacher or a teacher's right to a particular benefit. Selected from thousands of recent arbitration awards, many of these cases appeared in the American Arbitration Association's monthly publication "Arbitration in the Schools." Some of the many issues raised in the book include: how teachers should handle misbehavior; the appropriateness of using physical force; the meaning of academic freedom; how schools should treat the alcoholic teacher; when teachers should stand up for their rights; and how public schools should respond to religious demands. The following topics are covered in five chapters: "Discipline and Violence,""Sex, Drugs, Drinking, and Criminal Behavior,""Challenging the School Administration,""Breaking the Rules of Behavior," and "Rights Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement." Each chapter ends with a brief conclusion and a list of citations. The book concludes with a commentary (suggesting ways to avoid grievance arbitration and to develop mediation skills), a three-page selected bibliography, a copy of the Voluntary Labor Arbitration Rules, and a list of the American Arbitration Association Regional offices.
