Inservice Guide for "An Integrated Vocational Education and Math Skills Model."
Corvallis School District 509J, OR.
This guide is intended to train teachers in integrating math skills into the vocational curriculum. Included in the guide are process outlines, handouts, and transparency masters for three workshops designed to assist in the development and delivery of an integrated vocational education and math skills program. The first workshop, a 3- to 4-hour orientation inservice for both vocational and math instructors, is intended to explain the rationale for math equivalency and criteria for meeting math requirements and also to introduce program implementation processes. The next workshop is a 1-day work session for vocational and math instructors that is intended to accomplish the following: identify course sequences, review curriculum guides, work through math checklists to determine specific math concepts being taught, approve course sequences for credit, and select content units that would be developed for presentation and a professional development inservice. The third workshop is a half-day professional development inservice in which both math and vocational teachers make presentations on how selected concepts are taught in their subject areas so as to build mutual respect between the two groups of instructors and establish ongoing relationships within the school setting. The final section is a general checklist for planning, conducting, and evaluating inservice sessions to maximize their effectiveness. (MN)
