The Comprehensive Competencies Program Reference Manual. Volume I. Introduction.
Taggart, Robert
Chapter 1 of this reference manual is a summary of the comprehensive competencies program (CCP). It describes this system for organizing, implementing, managing, and efficiently delivering individualized self-paced instruction, combined with group and experience-based learning activities, using computer-assisted instruction. (The CCP covers not only academic objectives spanning the beginning to the postsecondary level but also a comprehensive array of functional objectives considered vital for adult performance in society, the home, and the marketplace.) Applications, use, and learner achievement are discussed. Chapter 2 presents results of a survey of CCP learners to determine perceptions of the CCP approach and its effectiveness. Questions regarding CCP are answered in chapter 3. They pertain to use, reason for CCP development, and effectiveness of CCP components. Chapter 4 is an overview of the CCP. Topics include content, rationale, and strengths and limitations. Focus of chapter 5 is the CCP as a cost-effective approach to basic skills instruction. (Chapter 6, entitled "A Business Approach to Social Programming," is under development and therefore not included in this document.) Chapter 7 highlights the structure, format, and use of the CCP. It provides a matrix which suggests the CCP's organizational schema, discusses the elements, and describes movement through the CCP. Other contents of chapter 7 include sample CCP materials. (YLB)
