Careers Education: Cinderella of Schooling.
Davis, Diana F.
The availability and adequacy of careers education and counseling for migrant and refugee youth in Australia were evaluated. Data were collected through two means: a major questionnaire study of a large sample of secondary schools across Australia, and an intensive but more limited interview survey of a few schools identified as having a large population of migrant children. The research focused on careers instructors, career education in the curriculum, the participation of migrant youths in work experience programs, program provisions for migrant youth in general, the dissemination of careers information for migrant/refugee youth and parents, program and student evaluation, migrant parents' expectations, and official policies and provisions. The study revealed that career education provisions are unsatisfactory for all students, and acutely so for those born overseas. Teachers felt that no amount of goodwill and enthusiasm on their part could compensate for their lack of professional preparation in identifying and dealing with the specific problems of migrant students. The few attempts to provide assistance, such as the provision of career information in community languages, were only partially successful at best. Numerous data tables supplement the text. (KH)
