A Longitudinal Study of a Demonstration Project Related to the Recruitment, Preparation and Retention of Highly Qualified Persons for the Teaching Profession: The Brackenridge Interns--The First Year.
Sears, James T.; And Others
The Brackenridge Interns in Teaching (BIT) program was implemented at Trinity University (Texas) in 1984. The program consists of three components: (1) the academic curriculum of Trinity University; (2) a variety of practicum experiences in selected Bexar County public schools; and (3) a comprehensive community education progam. The academic curriculum features arts and letters, the humanities, the behavioral sciences, the natural sciences, and mathematics. Practicum experiences in the county schools involve observation of classes at levels from K-12 in different types of schools. The community awareness program exposes students to community problems, and provides opportunities to work with community leaders. After the BIT program, the interns will teach in the county schools for at least two years. During this period, they will work with Trinity faculty and public school personnel. There are currently 17 participants in the BIT program. This report presents an overview of the first year of the program. Data were collected by interviews, observations, and intern journals. Information is provided on: (1) interns' perceptions of the BIT program, of their group, and of their career choice; (2) results of the Self-directed Search, the Career Maturity Inventory, the Survey of Personal Values, and the Survey of Interpersonal Values. An interpretive essay is presented: "The First Year: Decisions, Transitions, and Visions." References are included. About half of the document consists of appendices, which contain the assessment instruments used in gathering data. (JD)
