Multiethnic/Multicultural Materials.
Hylton, V. Wendell; Dumett, Leonie
Designed to implement multiethnic awareness, this guide helps teachers develop a curriculum that will assist students in understanding the benefits of cultural diversity; appreciate ethnic contributions to the nation; develop respect and tolerance for differences in race, sex, and national origins; and increase the teachers' own appreciation of this diversity. Section 1 covers basic information on ethnicity, including definitions, characteristics that identify an ethnic group and hold it together, money used in different countries around the world, and immigration. A larger portion of the guide focuses on language, containing grammatical features of Black English, aspects of both Spanish and Chinese that cause problems for students learning English, and symbols used in all languages. Section 2 contains lesson plans on each of 20 different United States ethnic groups, including activities for all grade levels, representative literature, and listings of outstanding members of each minority group. Several types of indexes complete the guide, such as free and inexpensive materials, audio-visual materials, suggested literature, and a bibliography. (CBC)
