Foundations for an Elementary Science Methods Course.

The proposed changes and plans for a new science methods course in an elementary teacher education program at Utah State University are discussed in this paper. The course uses a hands-on individualized curriculum which emphasizes an interactive student and teacher problem solving and helping relationship. Information presented in this paper includes: (1) introduction (reviewing background information, planning methodology, and rationale); (2) curriculum framework (listing the major goals and objectives which form the basis of the course's content and activities); (3) component inputs, processes, and outputs (specifying each topic's components); (4) research justification by goal and topic (providing philosophical and/or research support for each component); (5) conformation to the National Science Teachers Association's recommended standards (explaining how the program relates to the proposed standards); (6) summary statement; and (7) a listing of 128 references.
