The document presents uniform standards for facility accessibility by physically handicapped persons for Federal and federally funded facilities. The standards are to be applied during the design, construction, and alteration of buildings and facilities to the extent required by the Architectural Barriers Act of 1968, as amended. Technical requirements are presented for 33 facility elements, including space allowances and reach ranges, curb ramps, stairs, elevators, bathtubs, sinks, storage, alarms, telephones, and assembly areas. Separate sections address restaurants and cafeterias, health care, mercantile, libraries, and postal facilities. Appendices give additional information to help the designer understand minimum requirements of the standards for facility accessibility and include the Architectual Barriers Act of 1968, as amended through 1984.
