Action in the States: Progress toward Education Renewal. A Report by the Task Force on Education for Economic Growth.
Education Commission of the States, Denver, CO. Task Force on Education for Economic Growth.
This report reviews recent state initiatives in education reform, including state legislation, state programs, and decisions by state boards of education. The initiatives have been organized according to the eight recommendations for improvement made by the Task Force on Education for Economic Growth. These recommendations were to (1) develop state plans for improvement, (2) create more effective partnerships for education, (3) marshal essential resources, (4) improve the status of teachers, (5) make the academic experience more productive, (6) provide quality assurance in education, (7) improve leadership and management, and (8) improve service to underserved students. Each recommendation is discussed in a separate section, and each section provides a map showing where initiatives have been undertaken, an overview of general progress in pursuing the recommendations, a listing of some exemplary initiatives, and a profile of a selected state's activities. The report concludes with a brief consideration of ways to consolidate and improve on gains that have been made. Members of the task force for 1983-84, corporate contributors to the task force, publications of the task force, and the chief state school officers and educational policy aides for the states are listed.
