A State in Action: Working with Schools for Program Improvement. Symposium Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (67th, San Francisco, California, April 16-20, 1986). Session 813.
Matthews, Robin; And Others
Recent efforts by the Ministry of Education in the state of Victoria, Australia, to combine decentralization of educational policy decision making with guidance for local schools in the development of appropriate curricula were the focus of this symposium. The six presentations made on that occasion are collected in this document. Robin Matthews's paper, "Education in Victoria: The Context," opened the symposium with a review of political change in Victoria and its impact on educational policy. Elaine Atkinson described the scope of curriculum initiatives in Victoria in "A State-Wide Implementation Program to Support Government Policy Initiatives in Education." In his paper, "In Search of a More Coherent Curriculum: Developing Curriculum Frameworks," Max Stephens reported on the progress of a project for encouraging new efforts at coordinated curriculum development. Bob Boyd discussed the process of finding consensus among diverse groups in "Collaborative Decision Making in Local Development of School Policy and Practices." Maurice Robson spoke on "Identifying Processes for Coherent Curriculum Planning at a School Level: The Ministerial Paper No. 6 and School Project." The final speaker, John Atkinson, reviewed the efforts of a program sponsored by Victoria College in a paper entitled "The School Support Group: An Innovation in College-Based Consultancy." References and the names and addresses of the presenters are included. (PGD)
