To help those who find themselves resisting microcomputers and those who have already made a decision to begin using the new technology, this paper summarizes the ways microcomputers can increase the flexibility, efficiency, impact, organization, information access, and creativity of those in the field of communication. Following an overview of the advantages of using microcomputers, the paper suggests specific applications for word processing programs, database management systems, spreadsheet software, graphics packages, communications software, and various utility programs. The paper concludes with a discussion of microcomputer limitations and an annotated list of recommended readings for those who need more information on the differences between various types of microcomputers.
