College Placement Council, Bethlehem, PA.
An in-depth examination of the employment interview process is described in this document. The stated purpose of this manual is to help the interviewer understand his responsibilities, minimize interviewing mistakes, learn a systematic interview format, develop questioning techniques, design relevant and legal questions, and evaluate candidates accurately. The first chapter describes interviewer responsibilities and mistakes. Interview format, reviewing a resume, and the steps of an interview are described in the second chapter. The three basic questioning techniques (open, mid-range, and narrow), how to choose a technique, what to ask, and legal issues related to interviewing are discussed in the third chapter. Included in this chapter is a list of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission offices and training exercises on questioning. Tips on evaluating the candidate and completing the evaluation form are given, and a sample evaluation form is included in the fourth chapter. The final chapter discusses methods of reducing selection errors and contains an interview self-checklist. A 33-item interviewing bibliography is included. (ABL)
