Workteams. Supervising: Principles and Practices of Supervision. The Choice Series #13. A Self Learning Opportunity.
Carlisle, Ysanne
This student guide is intended to assist persons employed as supervisors in improving their ability to organize and manage work teams. Discussed in the first four sections are the following topics: groups and work teams (work groups, types of groups, work teams, and the effect of the workplace on groups); individuals in groups (the individual, personality, perception, motivation, and social influences); influences in groups (norms, group roles, and power and influence); and procedures for building a work team (development of a work team, orientation, conflict, cohesion, and team development). Each of these sections contains an introduction, instructional text that is interspersed with reinforcing learning activities, and a section summary. The fifth part of the guide includes a series of performance checks (an end check, a tutor check, and a work-based project). A unit review, which also includes a description of related extension courses and resources, concludes the guide. (MN)
