Sample unit outlines, designed for kindergarten through grade six, define the content, activities, and assessment tasks appropriate to specific grade levels. The units have been extracted from the Board-approved curriculum, Health Education: The Curricular Approach to Optimal Health. The instructional guidelines for grade one are: describing a cooperative family unit, identifying the family as a basic unit of society, comparing the growth of living things, and demonstrating an awareness of self and others. The instructional guidelines for grade two are: exploring family roles, identifying the family as a basic unit of society, comparing the growth of living things, and demonstrating a positive self-concept. Instructional guidelines for grades three and four are: exploring the influences of the family on the decision-making process, describing plant and animal reproduction, and listing similarities and/or differences between humans and animals. The instructional guidelines for grade five are: identifying and undertaking the systems of the body, identifying factors that strengthen family life, using effective interpersonal relationship techniques, and discussing growth and development patterns of individuals during puberty. The instructional guides for grade six are: understanding human reproduction, exploring how family relationships affect individual behavior, and understanding maturation and puberty. (RSL)
