A Guide to Curriculum Planning in Mathematics. Bulletin No. 6284.
Chambers, Donald L.; And Others
This guide was written under the basic assumptions that the mathematics curriculum must continuously change and that mathematics is most effectively learned through a spiral approach. Further, it is assumed that the audience will be members of district mathematics curriculum committees. Instructional objectives have been organized to reveal the continuity of development of a strand from kindergarten through grade 12. The guide was developed to serve four purposes: (1) provide a model and resource to local committees; (2) suggest criteria for content selection and strategies for curriculum articulation, implementation, and evaluation; (3) provide a description of the K-12 mathematics program for pre-service teachers; and (4) serve as a basis for all mathematics-related activity at the Department of Public Instruction in Wisconsin. The guide is organized into 12 sections. Sections 2-8 cover goals and objectives of specific content areas organized into seven strands: (1) number/numeration; (2) measurement; (3) geometry; (4) statistics; (5) algebra; (6) discrete mathematics; and (7) problem solving. Objectives are grouped by grade level. Section 9 considers college preparatory programs. Section 10 describes the curriculum development process. Section 11 describes issues affecting curriculum selection and instruction. Section 12 lists resources. The appendices, which comprise one-third of the guide, provide three categories of materials: (1) position papers and future-oriented papers by such organizations as the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Science Board Commission on Precollege Education in Mathematics, Science, and Technology; (2) outlines of learning objectives in mathematics for college-bound students (by the College Board and NCTM) and in Wisconsin for college-bound and non-college-bound students, as well as for Grades 3, 7 , and 10; and (3) a federally-funded report, "Girls, Math, and Science," published by the Center for Adolescence, University of North Carolina.
