Plants for Coastal Dunes of the Gulf and South Atlantic Coasts and Puerto Rico. Agriculture Information Bulletin 460.
Craig, Robert M.
Plants that have been identified as stabilizers and beautifiers of coastal dunes are described in this publication from the Soil Conservation Service (SCS). After years of tests and field trials, the SCS has singled out 43 plants as having good potential for dune revegetation based on their characteristics for erosion control, frequency of occurrence, and dominance in the natural ecosystem. The propagation techniques, habitat establishment, and the characteristic features of each of these 43 plants are explained. Information is also presented on the topics of: (1) coastal dune formation; (2) dune ecosystems; (3) revegetation planning; (4) dune plant selection and establishment; (5) planting herbaceous plants; and (6) planting trees and shrubs. An appendix contains a listing of the specified plants and the frequency of their occurrence on the Gulf and South Atlantic Coasts and in Puerto Rico. (ML)
