Dental Education in Florida. A Study Prepared in Response to Appropriation Item 450 of the 1983 General Appropriations Act (Chapter 83-300, Laws of Florida). 1984--Report 4.
Florida State Postsecondary Education Commission, Tallahassee.
The situation regarding dental education programs in Florida was studied, with attention to the type and size of programs needed to meet state needs, the geographic location of dental programs, funding and tuition policies, and the state's responsibility to provide an opportunity for its residents to participate in these educational programs. It was found that the supply of dentists in Florida is adequate to meet the demands of the population and also that the problem of chronically underserved populations, such as low-income, rural, and inner-city residents, cannot be addressed simply by increasing the supply of dentists. Among other conclusions are that: the needs of Florida for an adequate number of dentists can be met with the University of Florida College of Dentistry reducing its entering class enrollment by 14 students, or 18%; the University of Florida College of Dentistry should consider expanding the number of general practice residencies; Florida is at present adequately meeting its obligation to provide access to dental education for its citizens; and the University of Florida College of Dentistry should reassess its mission and consider giving greater emphasis to establishing a strong research component, particularly in the areas of geriatrics and gerontology. Data is displayed in 73 tables throughout the text. (SW)
