Postsecondary Education in Southeast Florida: Regional Coordination. A Study Prepared in Response to Specific Appropriation 512A of the 1985 General Appropriations Act (Chapter 85-119, Laws of Florida). 1986--Report 2.
Florida State Postsecondary Education Commission, Tallahassee.
A report on the feasibility of forming a single public four-year institution with multiple campuses to enhance public educational services in Southeast Florida is presented. Specifically of concern was the desirability of merging Florida International University (FIU) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The objective was to develop a structure for ensuring coordination and the delivery of educational opportunities. Three public hearings were held and a review was conducted of the literature and of activities in other states as well as in Florida regarding mergers of public postsecondary education institutions. Also considered were the general demographic and educational characteristics of Southeast Florida as they relate to the concept of merger. The merger was not recommended. It was proposed that a planning structure, to be developed from standing Southeast Florida committees, should be created by the Board of Regents, the State Board of Community Colleges, and the Postsecondary Education Planning Commission. The possibility was suggested of developing a joint catalog between FAU, FIU, and Broward Community College in order to describe coordinated program offerings. Appended are mission statements for FAU and FIU and minutes of meetings of program committee of the Florida Postsecondary Education Planning Commission. (SW)
