Basic Academic Requirements of Freshman Students in Departments of English.
Salamah, Galal
Three common policies used by English departments in Kuwait universities to accommodate the students in appropriate course types and levels are discussed and compared from a practical perspective. The three policies are concerned with placement tests and remedial courses and are intended to: (1) place students with high scores on the standardized high school graduation examination in specialized literature and linguistics courses, and reject low scorers; (2) match the students' course levels to the examination scores; and (3) place all freshman students in remedial and introductory courses regardless of previous performance. An alternative approach for freshman students would provide a group of four distinct courses that would be taught by language specialists and geared to the study skills required of college students. The courses would also prepare students for specialized courses in the English department. The four courses would include note-taking and organization, participation in academic discussion, academic reading, and academic writing. (MSE)
