The Robarts Study: A Survey of School-Age Hearing Impaired Children.
Sitko, Merrill C.; And Others
The report presents findings of a study designed to identify the numbers of hearing impaired students within one area of London, Ontario, and to analyze the levels of services afforded them. Twenty-five superintendents of special education were interviewed regarding numbers of hearing impaired students, types and numbers of staff, types of services provided, attitudes regarding accommodation of hearing impaired students, and possible changes in service provision. Results revealed information on distribution of hearing impaired students (location, age, degree of loss, other handicaps, grade level, and program). In addition, 126 parents were interviewed regarding pupil needs, feelings toward a private school (the Robarts School), social considerations, and career goals. It was concluded that most parents supported the concept of mainstreaming, that parents had minimal knowledge of the Robarts secondary program, and that, in line with the recommendations of superintendents and educators, a new or revised focus should be instituted for the Robarts School. The survey instruments and the pupil documentation sheet used in the study are appended. (CL)
