The OJJDP Program as It Pertains to Learning Disabilities.
Slott, Irving
The paper reviews the programmatic efforts of the Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) targeted for learning disabled delinquents. The history of research projects with this population is traced, and current grant programs designed to make key officials aware of learning disabilities are reviewed. The need for training and sensitization of juvenile justice system personnel is emphasized and four major tasks for OJJDP are cited; these include making available publications and videotapes for information and training. Appended are suggestions and recommendations to the OJJDP from a colloquium involving pediatric psychiatrists, educational psychologists, mental health researchers, clinical psychologists, criminologists, police and probation officers, judges, prosecutors, sociologists and special education administrators. The colloquium report addresses such issues as definitions of target population, identification of model programs, and encouragement of closer cooperation among federal agencies. (CL)
