Study of Indices Used in the Identification Procedure for Gifted Students.
Perryman, Lynne B.
Nine indices were compared for their ability to discriminate gifted and non-gifted students (N=5,647 in grades K-12). Correlation procedures and discriminant analysis were used to examine the following indices: (1) group IQ test scores; (2) individual full scale IQ test score; (3) individual verbal IQ test score; (4) individual performance IQ test score; (5) teacher rating scale; (6) Metropolitan Achievement Test--Reading Comprehension; (7) Metropolitan Achievement Test--Math; (8) parent questionnaire; and (9) class population assessment. The discriminant analysis procedure determined that the variables of Wechsler Intelligence Scale--Revised Full Scale, parent questionnaire, and teacher nomination were the strongest discriminators between gifted and nongifted students.
