School and Business Partnerships. Exemplary Practice Series.
Phi Delta Kappa, Bloomington, IN. Center on Evaluation and Research.
This volume is a literature overview of school-business partnerships, encompassing types of partnerships, issues, program models, and information for development and research. The first section, "Perspectives," includes six articles that place partnerships in historic context, identify motivations that contribute to partnership development, and introduce specific types of partnership programs. Concern is raised about long-term effects of increased private sector influence on education. The section concludes with two conceptual frameworks of collaborative programs. Twenty-four articles and reports in the second section, "Partnerships in Action," provide case examples. Profiles of adopt-a-school program development are followed by more detailed views of two large-city partnership programs and two examples of single-focus small community efforts. A unique contractual approach to reducing youth unemployment through school improvement is detailed. Several articles examine particular types of partnership activities, including work of local advisory councils for administrative planning, staff development through summer employment, internships and employee/teacher exchange, curriculum development, and the development of magnet schools. The section closes with examples of two organizational strategies for increasing resources and collaboration--school foundations and industry-education-labor councils. The third section, "Developing Partnerships," contains six articles that offer advice drawn from research and experience with successful partnership programs, including two nationally recognized resources.
