Printing Trades. Suggested Basic Course Outline.

This course outline is intended to assist vocational instructors in developing and teaching a course in the printing trades. The outline, which has been written in accordance with the block progressive method of teaching, addresses the following areas: orientation (a course overview, youth leadership, and theory); layout and design (type, format, and layout); letterpress printing (platen and automatic presses); cold type composition (mechanical, strike-on, phototypesetting, and proofreading techniques); camera operation (line photography, half-tone copy, and color reproduction); techniques of stripping; platemaking methods; offset presses; binderies; and entrepreneurship (economic systems and going into business). Each major block is divided into a series of minor blocks, which are in turn broken down into individual tasks. Each task section includes a task statement, an instructional aim, cross-referenced information outlines, teaching suggestions, and suggested references and aids. Appendixes to the guide include lists of suggested references and guidelines for developing a functional course of study, information on professional services available in Texas, a suggested list of items that should be included when writing specific objectives, and suggested activities.
