On the Importance of Touching.
Anderson, David W.
Based on the belief that positive physical teacher/learner interaction in the form of touch or closeness is a natural expression of humanness and an appropriate demonstration of a teacher's acceptance, caring, and concern for the wellness of students, this essay seeks to provide a clear theoretical framework from which to view the importance of physical contact to a child's development. Discussion centers around the value of positive physical interactions to communication, to the child's emotional and social maturation, and to the establishment of a healthy teacher/learner relationship. It is hoped that teachers, armed with a solid theoretical rationale, will be convinced of the appropriateness of touch and closeness with children, and will be able to confidently defend these as valid teacher actions.
