The Development and Implementation of a Program to Insure the Continuity of Parent Classroom Participation from Head Start to Kindergarten.

The goal of this practicum was to continue parent classroom participation from Head Start to kindergarten. Questionnaire data indicated that, while 27 percent of parents volunteer regularly in Head Start, only 8 percent volunteer regularly in kindergarten. To increase parent participation in kindergarten, Head Start parents and kindergarten teachers attended workshops designed to train and motivate participants to work effectively together. Objectives of the practicum were met: Head Start parents and kindergarten teachers made a written commitment to increase parent participation in the kindergarten classroom. Appended are (1) the parents' questionnaire; (2) the kindergarten teachers' questionnaire; (3) a checklist of ways parents can participate in the kindergarten classroom; (4) a form assessing kindergarten teachers' intentions regarding parent participation; (5) a questionnaire for former Head Start parents with children currently in kindergarten; (6) findings; (7) suggestions for increasing parent participation in kindergarten; (8) and a school readiness checklist.
