Pre-Freshman Summer Program: Evaluation Report.
Miller, Michael F.
The goal of the 1985 Queensborough Community College (QCC) Pre-Freshman Summer Program (PFSP) was to ease the transition from high school to college for entering College Discovery freshmen in order to improve their academic performance and increase their chances for retention at QCC. The 6-week program included academic tutorials in reading, writing, and mathematics; counseling workshops concerned with college orientation, career development, and personal and social development; and a stipend for books and expenses. The PFSP students exhibited high motivation, persistence, attendance, and completion rates in all components of the program. In addition, they made statistically significant gains in writing, algebra, and total mathematics scores on the City University of New York Assessment Tests. Both the PFSP students and their instructors rated all components of the program highly, although the instructors had some reservations about the timing of the program and the lack of sufficient instructional hours to adequately cover the material. The PFSP evaluation report consists of a non-statistical summary and discussion of the results, their implications and recommendations, followed by several technical reports concerning the evaluation design, findings, and analyses.
