Financial Aid for Community College Students: Unique Needs and Scarce Resources.
Miller, Scott E.
A study was conducted using findings of the 1983-84 Student Aid Recipient Survey (SARS) to isolate information about financial aid recipients attending public community colleges on a full-time basis. Highlighted findings included the following: (1) aid recipients attending community colleges were older than traditional college students, more likely to be self-supporting, and more likely to be members of minority groups than the general population of students attending public two- and four-year colleges; (2) about 95% of the aid recipients received Pell Grants, and 30% of these students received no other aid; (3) 30% of the aid recipients secured Guaranteed Student Loans, and 35% received state grants; (4) middle-income dependent students were more likely to receive National Direct Student Loans than low-income dependent students; (5) self-supporting students received larger College Work-Study awards than dependent students; (6) the most common aid package received by self-supporting students consisted of a Pell Grant and a state grant, while the most common package for dependent students was comprised of entitlement assistance (e.g., Pell Grants, Guaranteed Student Loans, and state grants); and (7) total costs of community college attendance averaged about $6,000 for self-supporting students and between $3,500 and $4,000 for dependent students. Based on study findings, it was concluded that although student costs at community colleges are lower than those at four-year colleges, the amount of aid available to community college students is limited.
